A sports action figure is a character figure caught in a typical sporting pose. It is made of plastic or another solid material. Although these sports action figures are usually marketed towards younger people they are also bought by a lot of adult fans. There are also specialized collectors who try to get every figure of their heroes wherever in the world they are produced.

The term “action figure” was first dropped in 1964 and was aimed to boys that rejected to play with dolls; it was the G.I. Joe figure which wasn´t a real sports action figure but at least an action figure. To be honest nearly all early action figures were from other areas rather than sports, mainly cartoons or movies.

But today we have uncountable sports action figures from nearly every athlete in the world. Many of them are only distributed through specialized chain stores and are not available in mass retailer markets.

Modeling Clay, Aluminum wire, plastic resin and sometimes even computer design software are used to design the prototypes of the figures and their “decorations”. The design process itself starts with which of the typical hero poses seems to be the best and is the most typical one. Then this pose is frozen into clay or something else. The different parts of the body are treated separately most of the time because they need different grades of details.  An immense amount of work is put into the figure´s facial expression, and there it is the eyes, the nose and the mouth which count most. The last thing to do is the costume, although if it comes to sports action figures in most cases there is not so much to do because of all these thin modern body suits.

The prototype is used to produce the molds with which the plastic pieces for the sports action figures are made and put together.

A lot of sports action figures are also provided which separate accessories which you can find in the packaging or have to be bought separately.

Some Sports Action Figures vary over the years which seem to be quite normal because the sports athlete gets older in real life too; maybe he or she changed or extended his or her sports style. There are a lot of reasons why sports action figures are withdrawn and exchanged for something new. Anyway, these are the ones hunted by the collectors because they can´t be bought anymore.

What counts in the end is the success of the sport athlete and in returns of this his or her figure. So if you are just at the beginning of your collector´s career and maybe you have gained some money with sport betting start with some mass produced figures, because the ones that are no longer produced could be pretty expensive.
